Challenges faced by local authorities

With research highlighting that 9 out of 10 people over the age of 55 have not made arrangements or put money aside for their care needs in later life, coupled with an ageing population, the pressure already felt by financially stretched local authorities is likely to continue to escalate.

There are many vulnerable adults who do not have close family or friends to assist with the management and safeguarding of their affairs. We have found that local authorities are often stretched to deal with these cases and sometimes lack the specialist experience required.

A further challenge to local authorities is recognising the cases that require a deputy and intervening accordingly. This could require an application to the Court of Protection. Failing to intervene can not only have a devastating effect on the vulnerable adult but can also increase the burden on Social Services and care funding.

Given the challenges outlined above and from our experience of working with local authorities, we have found that cases are often being missed or at least delayed.

At Price Slater Gawne, we understand the increasing pressures faced by local authority teams and can work with you, the vulnerable individual and their support teams as a professional deputy; helping alleviate the challenges in place.
