arrow_back Back to Articles calendar_month 7 Feb 13 schedule 2 min read Paul Marsay aged 36 died on 14 July 2011 when an inpatient on the Lakeside Ward at Leigh Infirmary, being treated for mental health problems. He was found dead by nursing staff in the bathroom on the ward. An inquest into Paul’s death took place last week at Bolton Coroner’s Court. The inquest heard evidence about the numerous mistakes that were made by the staff responsible for Paul’s clinical care. Paul’s family instructed Price Slater Gawne to bring a claim against The 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust for death caused by Clincial Negligence. The Trust admitted liability for clinical failures and the Trust has formally apologised to the family for their negligence. The case has now settled. Paul’s family are devastated by what happened to him. They temporarily entrusted his care to the 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust but things went badly wrong during his time on this ward. They firmly believe that Paul would still be alive now if it were not for the poor level of care afforded to him. Paul’s father and sister said: “The evidence we have heard has left us with no doubt that Paul died due to neglect by those who were supposed to take care of him and keep him safe. If the people working for 5 Boroughs had done their job properly and cared for him properly then he could have been alive today. We would like to say to anyone that reads Paul’s story or they themselves need someone to talk to seek help don’t suffer in silence. Paul’s memory lives on we miss him everyday and we will forever remember all the wonderful times we shared with him as a family.” The 5 Boroughs Partnership has overhauled their systems and policies in mental health care as a result of Paul’s death.
